The regatta, held on June 13-14, 2026, was blessed with what many sailors dream of - perfect sailing conditions. A rare treat, especially when you consider the lament of many clubs about low turnouts. But this event had everyone grinning, and it's not hard to see why.
A Champion's Presence
Steffan Williams, the Welsh ILCA Champion, fresh from his exams, added an extra layer of excitement. While he dominated the races, the real story might just be the battle for second place. Or was it?
The races were a mix of triangles and sausage courses, providing an interesting challenge for the sailors. The starts were clean, and the fleet's skill level was impressive, with a noticeable improvement across the board.
The Drama and Determination
One particular moment that stood out for me was when Martin Wood and Sarah Skinner, sailing an RS200, put pressure on Steffan. Their spinner twist and subsequent capsize added a dramatic twist, but their determination to finish was inspiring. It allowed Roma Kearns and Paul MacIntyre to shine, showing that sometimes, challenges present opportunities.
Socializing and Surprises
The social aspect of the regatta was just as memorable. With the club house out of commission due to a fire, the evening's festivities took place on the pier. A brilliant improvisation, and a testament to the club's resilience. Amanda's impromptu raffle added a fun twist, and the evening was a cracking success, thanks in no small part to Sarah's hard work.

The next day brought its own set of challenges with shifting winds and strong currents. The fleet navigated these obstacles with patience and grace. Steffan, true to form, led the pack, but his OCS and quick return in one race allowed Amanda and Tamara, and Roma, to experience life at the front. Steffan's strategic move in the next race, noticing the Race Comm's adjustment and changing his gate, showcased his tactical prowess. He won, yet again, but the real story here is the close competition and the skill of the other sailors.

The final race had its own twist with the windward mark deciding to take a walk! A unique challenge, but the fleet's proximity to each other meant they could continue, and Steffan, of course, still won.
Steffan Williams was crowned Open Champion, First Laser/ILCA, and First Youth. Roma's consistent performance earned her second place and First Lady. Martin and Sarah's tie with Paul Mac was broken by their count-back advantage, earning them third place and the 'Classic Helm' title.
A Well-Deserved Celebration
The regatta was a huge success, and the Race Committee, along with the crews aboard the RIBs, deserve a round of applause. The sponsors, Harken, and Schooner Park, provided excellent prizes, adding to the overall experience.
